Association of Poinciana Villages
Andrew’s Park Dedicated to APV Youth
The memory of Andrew Aaron
Rivera, a bright and playful child,
was honored on July 14, 2015 as
the Association of Poinciana Villages
(APV) dedicated “Andrew’s Park”
in Village 5 to all the children of
Poinciana Villages. The dedication
and park opening brought years
of hard work to fruition for Miriam
Figueroa (Rivera), Andrew’s mother.
She began diligently pursuing a
children’s park in 2006 following
Andrew’s death due to injuries
sustained when a car hit him as he
was riding his bike after school.
Andrew’s family was present for
the dedication, as well as Osceola
County Commissioner Brandon
Arrington and community activist
Annette Brown-Best, whose
advocacy efforts helped establish the park.
Andrew’s Park is ADA compliant and includes play
equipment designed especially for 2-5 year-olds and
6-12 year-olds. This pocket park is on a 1.5-acre
track of land that will allow for future development if
needed. A pocket park is a small park accessible to
the general public. Although they are too small for
physical activities, pocket parks provide greenery,
a place to sit outdoors, and sometimes a children’s
playground. They also provide areas where wildlife
such as birds can establish a foothold. Small parks
can even have a positive influence on neighboring
property values. Funding for the project was secured
by Osceola County through a Federal Community
Block Development Grant (CBDG).
